A couple of the clues seem offbase: I've heard grass called many things including HEmp, which I thought 25 down was, but never HERB. Must be a local thing. And, what about WELLINEVER applies to teetotalers, specifically? Is it don't tell me a reference to WELL drinks?I hope not; that's a bad pun that doesn't even really work. But the main complaint today is the fill: we have almost all the awful crutches except the RRN. Leading the parade is the worst: XER. Oh, we're just getting started. ABC, AAA, EER, the RPR random playground retort ISTOO, the RCD SSE. just call me an OLDNAG. As to HUNKERED, "Hid out" is a new one on me. You used to hunker down to play marbles. It's a positional thing.

Now I know. This feels like an offshoot of Sunday's puzzle with common phrases reimagined as expressions of a certain trade or activity. The choices here do seem old fashioned, as if they were lifted from a "Highlights for Children" magazine, but I enjoyed the fact that the grid was a bit crunchier than the usual Tuesday. Write overs included "adage" before MORAL, "adieu" before ADIOS, "am too" before IS TOO, and "hemp" before HERB. VROOM appears for at least the second time in recent days as does ATHOS, SEL, PEP, and the ever recurring, ever irritating APSE. Interesting that today's pan from Rex is offset by a top rating POW!from Jeff Chen.
